Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Donna gets a bad rap...

1st: Okay, the audience recording is a bit of a challenge...Awesome show, does anyone 'HAVE' a soundboard of this one(Broome County Arena on 1977-11-06)?!

2nd: I know Donna gets a bad rap...(I know I have given her my fair share!!) Although, if you look at the history of female vocals, she 'CAN' take a stand when she was, "on." So, I've been trying to find shows (like this one) that can showcase what Donna can do. Could you PLEASE help me with your suggestions??!

I've searched my notes and come up with five shows where I noted she was excellent. Here they are:

1973-03-21
Utica Memorial Auditorium. Laid back & leisurely but crystal clear & focused. From the jams, I assume they were very tripped out. Donna is excellent.

1976-06-29
Auditorium Theatre, Chicago. A Betty Board with marvelous sound and very nice performances. Really sweet versions of the classic first set songs, especially slow ones such as Peggy-O, Mission in the Rain, and Looks Like Rain (in which Donna is beautiful).

1977-05-09
Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo
Exquisite sound and inspired performances. Perhaps my favorite Uncle John's Band. Donna is excellent.

1977-12-27
Winterland

1978-12-30
Pauley Pavilion, UCLA. Donna is lovely: one of my favorite Scarlet>Fires - awe-inspiring. [don't know exactly when I noted this; I wonder if I would still say it today]

Overall, as I wrote some time ago (calling down the wrath of the Donna-dissers), IMO she obviously added more to the sound than she took away. I love the years before her, too, of course; rarely enjoy anything later than '79 very much.

Nice list... good stuff. My dates go a little into the 80's for sentimental reasons, mostly. I didn't get to a show until '80.

I would add 5-17-77 (check out the Jack Straw) and 5-25-77 to that list.
(sorry for no links)

11-06-77? I could send you a copy of that. Let me know your email and we can make that work.

Really the only time I dig Donna is on the smaller scale of JGB. Check out the Don't Let Go discs. Her voice shines all over those discs.
